Questions on Minority and Plurality

I would like to raise my question for Abrar Ahmad Shareef. It seems that Fiqh aqalliyat is a discourse only in the nation where muslim minority. On the other hand, we should consider in the nation like Indonesia. There is a need to regard minority muslim in the rest of Indonesia, like Papua and West Papua, Bali and North Sulawesi. I would like to ask your comment that fact.

I already stay for three years, and this time is coming years will be about four. Sometime, it is a need to see how muslim minority in the region. When MUI (Majelis Ulama Indonesia) declare that we should not forward “selamat Natal” to other country fellows, the statement is in Jakarta. Fortunately, three regions mentioned before stay on the neighborhood with majority non-muslim. Therefore, to maintain our livehood, there is no circumstance to avoid in congratulating Christmas to our friend in the society. It might be a big difference between livings in muslim majority compare to muslim minority.

Another concern is majority and minority is only a political term. Somehow, there is no emergency to treat this to solve as a cultural differences. When we claim it as political, it is about interest. Therefore, a problem if we approach this issue with politics term. Because living is not only about politics, but also to synergize harmony even though there are differences.

In circle of inside religion, there is a fact that people tend to recognize a prophet after Muhammad. At the early stage, there was Musailamah declared himself as a prophet. Therefore, it not rare to find out in every society will come up with a prophet. DR. Al Makin stated as sure as sun will rise from the east, every society will have their own their prophet.

In addition, there is a best practice of Indonesian society, like Lasem in Java, Ammatoa in Sulawesi, Topat war in Lombok, etc. they co-exist with other society. Engage, contribute, and live together. We can hear on daily life, linguistics practices on their conversation reflect that they always help each other. They treat other people as their brother. Eventhough they choose to have different religion, believe and faith, still for world need, there is no problem to work together. Relationship between people in the residences reflect a practice on lend a hand, play together, attend the same party.

On the ground of our society, there is no segregate with defferences with others. There is another good practice, “satu tungku tiga batu”. There are three stones to one place. It means that in one family there are three differences religions. They are aware that differences are not the reason to no unite on the family. Therefore, they still celebrate their own religious day and festival. When other families celebrate their holiday, another member will congratulate and help.

Another presentation is about Islamic higher education in India. Muslim is categorized as minority in India. When we come to the count from one billion, they are 11%. It means a large number. When we compare to Malaysia, or other muslim country, India muslim still a big number. Then, Islamic education in India inspired muslim scholars to establish madrasa like Darussalam in Gontor.

Those sentences are some ideas during my participation on The Sixth Al-Jamiah Forum, “On Plurakity and Minority”. It is facilitated by Al-Jamiah Research Centre, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University of Yogyakarta.
